8.10 Labels from other products (migration)
Use this section when documents already carry labels from Microsoft Purview (formerly AIP) or from a product that writes a document property, such as Titus. A document with no Ada label that carries a mapped foreign label then counts as carrying this Ada label everywhere: the file agent, the Office add-ins, the right-click tool and Office on the web. It gets the same restrictions and no “unlabeled” warnings.
- Open the Ada label and click + Add a label from another product.
- Choose the Source:
- Microsoft Purview: enter the Label ID (the GUID shown in the Purview portal; braces and letter case do not matter), the Label name, or both. The ID is preferred because it survives renames.
- Document property: enter the Property name and the Value that means this label. For email, Outlook reads the message header with the same name.
- If the Ada label has sub-sensitivities, choose the Sub-sensitivity that the foreign label stands for. This is required.
- Click Save, then Publish & Sign.
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Required fields | Microsoft: an ID or a name. The Microsoft label ID must be a GUID. Property: both name and value. |
| One owner | A foreign label can map to only one Ada label. Mapping it twice is rejected at publish. |
| Limits | At most 50 mappings per label. Microsoft name up to 128 characters. Property name up to 128, value up to 256. |
| Reserved property names | Names starting with Ada_, AdaLabel,
AdaSubLabel, MSIP_Label_ or
X-Ada- are rejected. Use the Microsoft source for Purview
labels. |
| Several matches | The most sensitive mapped Ada label wins (section 8.2.2). |
| Name matching | Case-insensitive and tolerant of letter-form differences such as Turkish dotted and dotless I. |
Write the Ada label at save and send
(policy.labelMigration.stampOnSave) is one switch
for all labels. It sits under the mappings in every label
drawer, and the hint shows All labels · labels with mappings:
N. It is saved with the label you are editing.
- Off (default): documents carrying a mapped foreign label only count as the Ada label. Nothing is written.
- On: Word, Excel and PowerPoint write the mapped Ada label at the next save, and Outlook at the next send. The audit event is Label migrated from another product. The other product’s own properties remain. In Word documents, the other product’s visual header, footer and watermark shapes (Purview content markings, Titus footer shapes) are removed when the Ada label is written. Ada’s markings then apply.
To migrate a whole folder or share without opening each file, use the
right-click tool’s migrate command (--migrate), first with
--dry-run to write only a report (see section 14.1). Every
foreign label a file agent finds is logged as Label of another
product found (foreign_label_seen). Filter the Audit
Log for it, or use Reports → Label Migration, to see
what is still unmapped.
